Using Chat in Crowdcast: A Guide for Attendees and Hosts

This guide will help you understand how to effectively use chat as both an attendee and a host.

Recommended Setup

Tips For Hosts

To create the best chat experience for attendees:

  • Confirm that the chat is enabled before your event begins so attendees can introduce themselves and connect with one another. You can hide/enable the chat before, during and after an event.

  • Set Chat Guidelines: At the beginning of the event, establish ground rules for chat to maintain a positive environment.

  • Assign moderators to help answer questions and monitor conversations during larger events. Ban or remove disruptive participants if necessary.

  • Encourage attendees to use the Q&A section for questions that should be addressed on stage.

  • Monitor both the public chat and Backstage Chat throughout the event.

Moderation Tools

  • Present comments on stage

To do this, simply hover over the comment in the chat, and select the icon that looks like a square with a dot in the centre.

  • Increase Engagement in the Chat

Use polls, reactions, and chat prompts ⬇️ to encourage participation. Refer to our support article How to Engage Audiences in the Chat.

  • Move questions from the chat to the Q&A section

Hover over the chat message, and clicking on the '?' icon.

  • Pop out the main and/or private chat

You can keep an eye on the conversation even while viewing other modules. You can place the popped-out chat alongside your event or on a second monitor if you have a dual monitor setup. To do this:

    1. Select the chat module on the right hand side of the screen
    2. Hover over the chat panel, and select 'pop out the chat' in the top right corner.

This is how the chat appears when it's popped out:

  • Manage Comments on a Question

Hosts, moderators, and attendees can interact with comments on questions.

To view additional options for a comment:

  1. Hover over the ... (more options) menu next to the comment.

  2. Select one of the available actions:

    • Edit the comment.

    • Post Comment as Question to copy the comment to the Q&A section.

    • Delete the comment.

For Attendees

  • Join a few minutes early to introduce yourself and test your connection.

  • Use chat for discussion and networking, and reserve the Q&A section for questions you'd like the host to address.

  • Keep conversations respectful and relevant to the event topic.

Common Questions

Who can see the public chat?

Anyone attending the event can view and participate in the public chat unless the host has disabled it.

Can hosts disable chat?

Yes. Hosts can disable or re-enable chat at any time before, during, or after an event.

Can attendees edit their chat messages?

Attendees can edit their messages when using a supported web browser. Message editing is not currently available in the Crowdcast mobile app.

What's the difference between Chat and Q&A?

  • Chat is designed for live conversation and attendee interaction.

  • Q&A is designed for questions that hosts may want to address during the event.

Hosts can move messages from chat into the Q&A section.

Who can access Backstage Chat?

Backstage Chat is only available to hosts, co-hosts, speakers, and moderators. Attendees cannot view or participate in Backstage Chat.

Can I export chat messages?

Yes. Hosts and assigned moderators can export chat logs for a session as a CSV file.

Why can't I see the chat?

If chat is missing:

  • The host may have disabled it.

  • Refresh your browser and rejoin the event.

  • Make sure you're using a supported browser, preferably Google Chrome.

  • Check your internet connection.

Can I pop out the chat into a separate window?

Yes. Hosts can pop out both public and private chat windows, making it easier to monitor conversations while managing other parts of the event.
