What is RTMP 2.0?

Introducing the new and improved RTMP Mode.

Updated over a week ago

What is RTMP 2.0?

RTMP 2.0 is an upgraded version of RTMP Mode that we are currently testing. RTMP 2.0, like its predecessor, is an excellent option for incorporating advanced graphics, transitions, multi-camera or multi-mic setups, and high-quality audio for musicians.

However, with RTMP 2.0, you'll also benefit from lower latency, static RTMP keys (which means your URL and stream key won't change per session), and faster downloading of post-event mp4s. πŸ™Œ

While we are testing this new version, events using RTMP 2.0 will not be counted toward your monthly hours.

How can I switch to RTMP 2.0?

  1. Click the More button in the lower left corner of the event window.

  2. Select Use RTMP 2.0.

  3. Connect the provided URL and Stream Key to your preferred encoding tool.

Can I still use RTMP 1.0?

Yes, you can still use RTMP 1.0 if you prefer. Simply select User RTMP 1.0 instead and follow the instructions outlined here.

What are the recommended encoding settings for RTMP 2.0?

  • Resolution: 1920 x 1080 (1080p)

  • Video bitrate: 2000 - 3000 kbps

  • Audio bitrate: 64 or 128 kbps

  • Frame rate (FPS): 30

  • Keyframe intervals: 2 seconds (do not use automatic keyframe intervals)

When will RTMP 2.0 be fully implemented?

We plan to run both RTMP services in parallel during March and fully transition to RTMP 2.0 in April. You can stay up to date by following our changelog.

Anything else I should consider before using RTMP 2.0?

  • Live captions are currently unavailable with RTMP 2.0. We plan to make these available for RTMP 2.0 in the future.

  • Certain features like Crowdcast's built-in Studio and clipping are not available in RTMP sessions.

How can I provide feedback on RTMP 2.0?
